Ozza is not capasone

If we wanted to borrow the expression of a local Salento movement that stated “Salento is not Puglia” we could say: “Ozza is not a capasone!“.
Ozza is the Salento name of the capasone (in Italian giara), a container used in the past to store wine, oil or more rarely food to be preserved for the winter.
The capasone is the ceramic container par excellence, as well as the most famous. It is a “transit” container between the barrel in the cellar and the mug for the table. 
Its name derives from the dialect adjective capase (capable) and indicates the largest of all containers. With an opening at the top and a tapered belly towards the end of which there is usually a protruding spout from which the wine comes out. These containers were used throughout Puglia, but depending on the location they could take on slightly different characteristics and shapes.
The Ozza, for example, is typical of Salento, and is distinguished from the Grottaglie specimens in that it has a usually more elongated neck and is more pot-bellied and less tapered than the capasone.
The pot-bellied appearance gave rise to the Salento expression, not very kind, addressed to a fat person: “t’a fattu quantu na’ ozza..”
In essence, the ozza is a less well-known, clumsier and for this reason, in our opinion, more particular and more beautiful.
And knowing how to distinguish the draft from the capasone undoubtedly represents a note of merit for the true tourist aware of the specificities of Salento..
At Corte Manfredi, in Alessano, it is possible to admire an ancient example dating back to 1800, probably one of the most beautiful ones that have remained intact to this day.
